Thanks to Kurtz’s Beach for hosting our April General Membership Meeting. This is always a great place to have a meeting. The staff is so helpful and the food is great. Our speaker was Leslie Bridgett. She talked about Pasadena’s Unique Historic Farmstead, HANCOCK’S RESOLUTION: Then and Now. She recalled the reasons the farm is part of the Star-Spangled Banner Trail and provided an update on its innovative community programming.

Nine PBA members on March 29th met in Annapolis with Sen. Simonaire, and Delegates Nic Kipke and Meagan Simonaire. We discussed current bills and also provided PBA input on bills that was considered helpful to the Anne Arundel County Delegation. We spent time discussing the Family Sick Leave Bill that at the time of our meeting was passed by both the House and Senate and was in Reconciliation to work out differences in the bills. We learned on April 5th that the reconciled bill was passed and will now be sent to Governor Hogan for his signature. Governor Hogan has said he will veto this bill. The Maryland Assembly is set to override Governor Hogan’s veto to make ensure this law passes.

We need to act now. Download our Sample Letter for text you can use to email the following legislators:

    Senate Finance Committee

    thomas.mclain.middleton@senate.state.md.us, Chair
    john.astle@senate.state.md.us, Vice Chair

    House Economic Matters Committee
    dereck.davis@house.state.md.us, Chair
    sally.jameson@house.state.md.us Vice Chair

Please do this right away to help try to keep this bill from becoming law. Please contact me at larry@pasadenavoice.com if you have questions or need any assistance.

    Spring has Sprung!

The weather is heating up and I hope your businesses are as well. We are already through the first quarter of 2017. The year has started off great for the PBA. We recently held our annual scholarship fundraiser and not only was it a great time, it also was a great success. The event raised about $11,700. That is a huge number and it would not be possible without the support from our awesome PBA members and community that showed up and supported the event. I want to send a big thank you out to all of our sponsors for the event.

PLATINUM: Huff Insurance and St. John Properties.
GOLD: Anne Arundel Community College Foundation, BB&T, and Free State Photo Booth.
SILVER: Anderson Davis & Associates, CPA, PA , Arundel Federal Savings Bank, Edward Jones - Brian M. Conrad, CFP®, Moscker Insurance Agency, Northern Anne Arundel County Chamber of Commerce
BRONZE: Ace Hardware and Hearth, Bruster's Ice Cream of Glen Burnie, Friends of Downs Park, Gunther Refuse Services, Lloyd's of Pennsylvania , and Oakley Construction.

These sponsors were a huge part of the success of the fundraiser. I want to thank Kurtz’s Beach and their staff for the great venue, food and service. And thanks to the band, Guys In Thin Ties. They put on a great show that left the crowd calling for an encore after their last song. I think the chant of “ONE MORE SONG, ONE MORE SONG” could be heard out over the bay when they finished up. And thank you to all of the businesses that donated items and services to our silent auction. The silent auction is a big part of our fundraiser and your donations are greatly appreciated. Last, but definitely not least, I want to thank everyone that helped out in organizing and running the event: Sandi Parrish, Lisa Hart, Ruth Toomey, Mary Brodowski, Linda Loane, Doug Cashmere, Larry Sells, Brandi Dorsey, Sam Tanner, Angela Balsamo, Brian Conrad, Christine Richardson and my family, Nancy Nicklow, Allie Nicklow and Dalton Nicklow for putting up with me during crazy times leading up to the event….If I forgot anyone, please accept my apologies and let me know. As you can see, it truly is a team effort and with the support of this team, my family, the entire PBA and the Pasadena Community, this event continues to get bigger and better each year.

I am looking forward to the many events that we have planned for the year with the next one being the Taste of Pasadena on April 25th. Tickets are on sale now! Tickets are limited to 325, so act fast to make sure you do not miss the event. .

    Hayley Bowerman

President Jerry Nicklow, Brian Conrad, Hayley Bowerman and Sandi, recently met with the Anne Arundel County Police Department's Traffic Safety Division regarding parade safety rules and a slight change to the route. As far as safety goes, we want to continue reiterating our rules that have been and will be in place year after year. This is for everyone's safety.

    • No revving of engines.
    • Children CANNOT get on and off floats or vehicles once the parade has started.
    • ONLY adults that are WALKING in the parade are permitted to hand out candy. Candy is not to be thrown in the roadway.
    • If a child is driving a motorized vehicle, they must have a driver's license.
    • If you look in front of your group and cannot see another group, you must pick up the pace.
    • Absolutely no one can ride on the roof of a vehicle, this includes both children and adults.
Additionally, there is going to be a slight change to this year's parade route. Instead of going back through E. Shore Road and 218th Street, AACPD is proposing that we simply go straight down Mountain Road, making a right onto Outing Avenue and concluding at George Fox Middle School. We are going to follow up next with AACPD sometime over the summer to discuss the different ways we can notify people about this change.
